Principal's Message

Welcome to Windham Center School!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Windham Center School.  We are a 5th and 6th grade school with just over 400 students and a highly dedicated staff.  The staff works collaboratively to create highly engaging lessons that meet the diverse needs of their learners. They create an environment where both their academic and social emotional needs are met.  With educating the whole child our students meet high levels of achievement and growth.  Our school is in year three of implementing the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create and maintain a safe and effective learning environment while equipping students with the social skills needed to ensure their success not only in our school, but their community. We will follow the core values of R.O.A.R, responsibility, opportunity, achievement and respect. The purpose of this initiative is to establish a school climate where appropriate behavior is the norm.  We will model and teach positive behaviors and students will be recognized for showing the Wildcat Way.

We continue to work towards our NEASC accreditation with focus on the vision of a graduate.  This year we will put our action plan into place to guide our work with our students becoming inspired innovators, global citizens, lifelong learners, critical thinkers, effective communicators and responsible collaborators. This work will begin with our students at Golden Brook School to our final graduates at Windham High School.

As a school community, we believe in fostering leadership skills early on.  Students in both grades 5 and 6 will have an opportunity to run for student council and represent their classroom and school.  As a representative, they will plan and organize some community service events such as making cards for veterans, the "unsung heroes" of WCS (nurses, custodians, office personnel) and the elderly, collecting candy for the deployed, Lazarus House holiday drive and more!In addition to their classroom experience, we offer several clubs to further increase socialization among our students.  Throughout the year students can get involved in clubs like bowling, robotics, ski, floor hockey, book clubs and more.  After school activities are a great way for your child to continue to build long lasting friendships.

The Fine Arts Department at Center School is excited to bring a variety of concerts throughout the school year to our community.   We have a high caliber of students who perform in band, choir and orchestra. Students in art class will be able to create three dimensional art including ceramics.  This was not something we could accomplish during the pandemic.

What really sets Windham Center School apart from the other schools is our outdoor classroom and dining experiences.  Research on outdoor learning has found that there are major benefits on student mental health, and academic performance.  Students can be found enjoying lunch under the umbrellas and surrounded by flower pots or sitting upon a large natural rock learning in their natural environment.

There are always exciting things happening in our classrooms and on our campus.  We continue to encourage you to get involved by joining our parent groups, volunteering at school activities and taking an active role in your child’s education.  Windham Center School is committed to the success of all students.  We are looking forward to the 2023-2024 school year.

Sincerely,

B.J. Martin
